The e-Flash is sent out to current E.I.
members. This is a free service to members who appreciate being reminded of
upcoming events which they perhaps somehow missed in their daily busy lives. If
you do not already get the E.I. e-Flash, it’s because we do not have your
current e-mail address. You can sign up by updating your
membership information here or simply by communicating your e-mail address to
E.I. by sending an e-mail to Webmaster or Polly Kranick at pollyk98@msn.com.
It’s important to remember that E.I. policy prohibits any sharing of membership
information with third parties to be used in any way, and even when you send us
your e-mail address, you can still specify that your personal information should
not be listed in the E.I. Directory. For regular news only posted on this
website go here.

Time to Renew and Win!
By now you've probably received your annual E.I. renewal form in the mail.
This timely reminder is to help you be eligible for one of the free E.I.
saddle pads. Postmark by Oct. 29th and you may find yourself riding in style
atop a beautiful new white pad.
Renewing your E.I. membership means you'll continue to:
• Receive Flying Changes every month
• Enjoy discounts on clinics and schooling show entry fees
• Post free ads on our web site
• Be a group member of USDF
• Stay in touch with the local equine community
• Volunteer and learn new things about horsemanship and showing
These benefits and so much more are all part of being a member of E.I. The
organization is on a very successful upward curve, holding more clinics,
shows, seminars, and other events than in many years. Participation is high
and still growing thanks to a successful board and a great group of
volunteers.
Attendance at our annual auction this year was triple that of past years.
Our schooling and recognized shows in Dressage, Eventing and Driving were
overbooked and the clinics had wait lists. Stay at the front of the line by
being a member and hearing about the opportunities first.
See you around the barns!

Karen Robinson Freestyle Clinic Reminder
This is the tenth clinic in a series of freestyle clinics
organized by Equestrians' Institute. The purpose of these clinics is to
offer access to the Musical Freestyle design process to riders of all
abilities.
The clinic will be hosted at Pacific Moon Equestrian Center in
Arlington, WA on October 12-14, 2007. The clinic begins Friday evening
at 6pm with a three hour presentation covering the freestyle design
process and what judge's look for in a good freestyle. Recently, Karen
covered the Pan Am Games as a journalist and may have insights from that competition.
Saturday, the session begins at 9am as riders work with their horses on
music selection. Karen determines the beats per minute for each gait
and then begins to match music with each riding team. Each of the
riders work with Karen for 45 minutes. Lunch break is at 1pm.
Sunday's session is spent working on choreography and some additional
music selection. Auditors are encouraged to attend the evening
presentation and these informative sessions. We have many levels
participating in this clinic. Audit fees are $10/day for E.I. members.
Karen Robinson has designed freestyles for riders around the world. In
2006, her client Bernadette Pujals, finished 10th at the World
Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany. Despite growing international demand for her work, Karen enjoys working with the more fun-less pressure clients she has locally.
For more information about freestyles, visit Karen's website
www.Applausedressage.com
For directions visit www.Pacific-Moon.net
For more information about the clinic, please contact Kathleen Doyle at

Attention Equestrians,
We Need Your Input!
In an effort to better serve you, Equestrians’ Institute would like to know
what kinds of educational clinics you are interested in.
• Are there specific soundness issues you would like to know more about?
• Are there general care and maintenance concerns you would like addressed?
• Do you have questions about nutritional health care for your horse?
• Are you interested in the dissection of a specific body part?
Please email us your topics of interest so that we can set up clinics which
directly meet your needs.
We will announce the results of the inquiry. Because we offer a limited
number of clinics, we will pick the top three requested topics and the
subsequent ensuing clinics.
Thank you for your participation.

Cross Country Course Design and Jump Building Seminar with STEVE BUCKMAN
Cross Country Course Design
and
Jump Building Seminar
with
Steve Buckman
FEI “C” Course Designer
USEA “R” Course Designer
July 7 & 8, 2007
Two days with master cross country jump builder and course designer Steve
Buckman, at Sunset Farm Equestrian Center (a Whatcom County Park facility)
in the Birch Bay area of Blaine, Washington.
Day one (July 7) focuses on jump construction; theory and building
techniques as well as some "hands-on" construction for those who wish to
join in (just observing is OK, too). Learn the process for constructing
portable timberframe style jumps that can be built in many shapes with
different types of materials. Steve will discuss tools, tool safety, and
material handling (ie: how to move logs and timbers without hurting
yourself!). We will build a jump or two on this day.
Day two (July 8) focuses on course design theory, the use of terrain and the
practical application of using a tractor or skidsteer to move portable jumps
around to change the courses. We'll have demo riders in the afternoon to
ride the lines that we'll set up.
Participants may attend one or both days as their interest dictates, but are
encouraged to attend both as this kind of learning opportunity isn’t
available very often.
This seminar promises to be a very interesting and informative weekend for
jump builders, course designers (and builder/ designer wannabes), coaches
and riders. Everyone with an interest in good quality cross country jumps
and courses is welcome!

EI Dressage Show
Committee Needs your Help!
1. We need folks to help us set-up and tear down the shows at the l'Aperitif,
Beaujolais and Champagne Classic. We need help on May 26th in the afternoon
at Bridle Trails and late Sunday May 27th to tear down/pack up the
l'Aperitif. We need help on Thursday June 21st at Donida farms in the
afternoon to set up show office and arenas etc.. and Sunday June 24th late
afternoon to pack up the show office; Then, finally the set up for the
Champagne Classic on Thursday July 19th at Donida, and the tear down/final
pack up on Sunday, July 22nd. No experience necessary; Just folks to stay
with us for a couple of hours. (right now we usually only have 2-3 folks
that do this! It takes forever!) Contact Lothar Pinkers or Kellie Larsen.
2. Carolyn Pinkers is retiring from her Show Awards position! Thanks Carolyn
for all your hard work! We need a couple of folks to organize ribbons,
awards, etc. before the show and then to compile and hand out awards and
ribbons in the show office. Share this job with a friend and have fun! Will
train! Contact Carolyn Pinkers or Kellie Larsen.
3. Additional Volunteer Coordinators to man the booths at the Beaujolais and
Champagne Classic. Some time spent before the show lining up volunteers.
Work with our Volunteer Coordinator for EI--Heidi Gloudemans and her main
assistant, Colleen Jones. WE have super new software on line to make this
job even easier! Contact Heidi.
4. Assistant Show Managers and Secretaries in training. We would love to
have more folks trained in how to do these shows! It does take some time and
commitment. But imagine a show committee big enough that we can trade off
years! This is what I am envisioning. Be a secretary or show manager with
your best friend! Share the job! We'll train you. Lothar will retire someday
soon and we want our EI shows to have a smooth transition. Let's work hard
together to maintain these shows and not lose them!
Let's keep our shows going strong with everyone doing a small, “bite-sized”
job and working together! We want to ride our horses and show as well. If we
look back 10-15 years we can see that we have lost venues and several
recognized shows. We are determined that this doesn't happen to us and will
need your help to make it happen.
Write us at EI-Volunteer@equestriansinstitute.org, and we will get you in
touch with the right person.
Thanks, Kellie Larsen

Steuart Pittman Eventing Clinic: March 31st - April 1st Tall Firs in Redmond,WA
THIS CLINIC is aimed towards Eventers who want to prepare for the upcoming
competition season or to regain enthusiasm after a Pacific Northwest winter!
Steuart is back by popular demand; he gave a clinic at Donida Farm last Fall and
received rave reviews. Steuart and his family own Dodon Farm in Davidsonville,
Maryland where they breed, train and sell horses for all disciplines. He has
taken the US Eventing Association's Instructor Certification Program and is now
a part of the small group of trainers in the country certified to teach through
the preliminary level.
Steuart Pittman is a wonderful clinician – very positive and down to earth. He
doesn’t overface horse or rider but helps the partnership progress and push the
envelope. Steuart has a particular emphasis on dressage as the key to success

Support The Washington State Horse Park
The E.I. board of directors once in a while speaks out outside the normal
business of of running shows or clinics on issues that are strategic to E.I. It
is the responsibility of the board of directors to think about the future of our
sport in Washington State, and we think the Washington State Horse Park is the
type of initiative that could make a real difference to us all. If you have
already supported the Washington State Horse Park - Thank you! If not, consider
what the Horse Park is worth to you, and give it that little next push to make
it real!
As you may know already, the Horse Park achieved a major victory in the final
days of 2006. Governor Christine Gregoire included in her Capital Budget
proposal to the 2007 state Legislature a request for more than $3.8 million for
the first phase of constructing the Washington State Horse Park in Cle Elum.
This is not enough, however. The legislature has to vote on all these budget
items, and there are many other worthy causes.
We believe there are two major reasons why the Horse Park was able to gain the
Governor’s support: a thriving horse community will benefit residents and
related businesses all over the state and, building the Horse Park will require
a relatively modest amount of funding compared to tax dollars currently being
sought by some “for profit” teams and franchises.
John Williams' has recently completed a design of an Advanced level cross
country course suitable for a FEI Gold Cup to run over 75 acres adjacent to the
Horse Park's 106 acre main campus in Cle Elum. This adjacent acreage will also
be used for the Combined Driving endurance phase. This makes one piece of the
Horse Park more real to us all. The Horse Park will also provide extensive
dressage facilities on the scale required for national shows.
The fate of the Horse Park now rests in the hands of members of the Senate Ways
and Means Committee and the House Capital Budget Committee, which will evaluate
and recommend funding for projects in the state’s 2007 budget. Deliberations
already are underway in Olympia, and lobbying for pet projects by special
interest groups is intense. These Committees will decide by the end of February
which projects to endorse – that means we have a few remaining weeks to
demonstrate to key Committee decision-makers that there is broad grass-roots
support for the Horse Park from individuals, groups and businesses across the
state.
If you like the board of E.I. believe that the Horse Park will promote the
equestrian sports in our state and help us keep up with very competitive Oregon
and British Columbia, you should take a few minutes and follow the instructions
below:
Write to members of the Ways and Means and Capital Budget Committees stating
your endorsement for the Horse Park and how you and the community will benefit
once it’s built. (At a minimum write to the Democratic leaders: Senators
Prentice and Fraser, and Representatives Fromhold, Ormsby and Schual-Berke).
Ask your friends and horse enthusiasts to write to all Committee members
expressing their personal support (speaking as a state resident, and not from
any particular legislative district). We especially need horse people in the
following areas to become very vocal, since they reside in Committee leaders’
legislative districts: Vancouver (WA), Spokane, Kent, Renton, Olympia, Lacey,
Tumwater, Tukwilla, Ridgefield, Battle Ground.
You can get these instructions and more at

Karen Robinson Freestyle Clinic Feb. 9-11,2007
This is the ninth clinic in a series of freestyle clinics organized by
Equestrians' Institute. The purpose of these clinics is to offer access to the
musical freestyle design process to riders of all abilities.
The Karen Robinson Musical Freestyle Clinic will be hosted at Bear Creek Farm in
Woodinville, WA, February 9-11, 2007. The Friday evening seminar begins at 6pm
with a three hour presentation on the freestyle design process. Audit fees are
$10/day for E.I. members. Volunteers audit for free.
Saturday's session begins at 9:00a.m. as riders work with their horses on music
selection. Karen determines the beats per minute for each gait and then begins
to match music with each riding team. Each of the ten riders work with Karen for
45 minutes.
Sunday is spent working on choreography and some additional music selection.
Auditors are encouraged to attend these informative sessions. We have many
levels participating in this clinic.
Karen has designed freestyles for riders around the world. In 2006, her client,
Bernadette Pujals, finished 10th at the World Equestrian Games in Aachen,
Germany. Despite growing international demand for her work, Karen enjoys working
with the "more fun, less pressure" clients she has locally.
For more information about freestyles, visit Karen's website

Donations Needed to Send E.I. Member to Gladstone
Two fellow E.I. members and another local rider are having successful seasons in
the high performance division. Their goal is to attend the USET Dressage
Festival of Champions at Gladstone next month. Jennifer Schrader-Williams and
Nicki Grandia have qualified for the Brentina cup, and Jeremy Steinberg is
currently ranked tenth on the USET Grand Prix rankings with several qualifying
competitions yet to be held.
I'm forwarding this request for financial support from Jennifer's team in
hopes that some of you will be able to contribute. She needs to raise money
within the next three weeks to cover transportation expenses. Nicki will also
need support and should Jeremy qualify, he will face similar expenses.
Jennifer and Nicki have been an E.I. member for several years. All three are
valued for their work and support in Western Washington. We all benefit from
their experience and training. Supporting them will help to ensure that
professionals of their caliber can pursue dressage in Region Six rather than
in California or Florida.
Please read the message below for further information about Jennifer and how to
donate funds. Please contact Paula Helm directly if you have questions or other
fundraising thoughts to help support Jennifer. Paula's contact information is
phone: 203-247-4628.

Jennifer Schrader-Williams and H.S. Wistar of Summervale Farm have just
qualified for the inaugural 2006 Brentina Cup at Gladstone, NJ in June.
This is what Jennifer says about qualifying - "I have always dreamed of
representing the United States in international competition and I believe this
is the first step. I have been blessed with many supporters and I thank you in
advance for giving me a hand in representing USDF Region 6 in the Brentina Cup."
The Brentina Cup will be open to riders between the ages of 18 – 26 who are
competing at the Intermediare – II level. USEF has designed this national
competition to assist and encourage today's Young Riders as they transition to
the Senior Grand Prix ranks; the Brentina Cup will shed much-needed light on
tomorrow's stars – TODAY.
Jennifer's I – 2 qualifiers earned her 2 blue ribbons which included a 66.5% at
the Del Mar National Show and 66.5% at the DG Bar Show, both in California.
Jennifer is thankful for the opportunity to show in the Brentina Cup, but she
needs financial help in order to compete.
Here is a basic breakdown of expenses:
Transportation Wistar (splitting pallet each way!) $9,100
Vanning Wistar to and from Airport $1,400
Hotel for Jennifer for 10 days in NJ $1,400
Hotel for Jurgen (trainer) in NJ $1,090
Flight cost for Jurgen $ 550
Rental truck - hay and feed transport $ 750
Veterinary Services $1,000
Total for Brentina Cup participation $15,290
Total raised thus far $4,000
Funds needed $11,290

Dressage Scribing Clinic
Thursday, March 9th, 2006 6:30 PM
Simpatico Stables, Redmond, WA
$10.00 registration, $5.00 for E.I. Members
Space is limited:
Scribing is an excellent way to increase your understanding of what a judge
looks for during a dressage test. The scribe has an opportunity to see the test
from the judge’s perspective. Riders who scribe gain a deeper knowledge of the
sport. They also forever endear themselves to show management; never a bad
thing!
This evening session is designed to familiarize participants with the process of
scribing for dressage tests up to Second level. There will be a discussion of
commonly used terms and abbreviations, scribes’ etiquette, how to prepare for
scribing, and other related topics. Everyone will practice scribing with an “L”
dressage judge, and will have the opportunity to ask questions and receive
feedback.
Please bring several pens and a legal sized clipboard. The class will be held
indoors, so space is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served
basis. Participants may pay at the door, but contact Wendy Meyers (information
above) to reserve your spot.

successful in helping our business members to advertise their business and/or

business membership will pay for itself.
For individual and business members both, we also offer advertising
opportunities throughout the year, providing an opportunity to plan your annual
advertising budget and figure out how you will want to spend your advertising

posted on the E.I. website under “Forms” (here you will also find information on
sponsorship opportunities). Our deadline for advertising in the OMNIBUS is
January 31, 2006.
